Mr. Kono is a talented ex-colleague from Albert's days as an architect at the legendary I.M. Pei's design office in New York. So when it came time for him to photograph this Flatiron apartment for record, FRAME did not hesitate to collaborate. Born and raised in Japan, Mr. Kono's love for architecture was fostered by his father's occupation with Japan's Ministry of Construction. After studying architecture and working in interior design he moved to New York where he would go on to found his own design firm in the same Gramercy space as I.M. Pei / Pei Partnership Architects.. Over the span of his rich career, Mr. Kono has won several awards and built some fabulous pieces. After six hours of shooting, it was a pleasure to dialogue in his design process, which showcases a hidden kitchen and contrasting uses of different species of wood.
